ASSUMING the facts reported in the edition of the Lyme Regis News dated September 19 are correct, and that this important post office is facing closure soon a few facts need to be discussed.
I worked for the Post Office for 35 years as a post office clerk and manager.
This type of problem occurred occasionally when suddenly sub-postmasters died, or quit or were prosecuted for false accounting etc.
District managers did not close these necessary sub offices but sent their own trained counter officers to run the office until a buyer was found. This worked quite well, I know because I was often asked to take over this position when I was employed as a post office counter clerk.
I would also point out that in some cases the sub-postmasters staff was temporarily employed by the Post Office until a new sub-postmaster was found.
I believe this might be the solution for Lyme Regis until a new sub-postmaster is found.
We must retain a post office in Lyme Regis as so many people depend on it.
We lost the sorting office some time ago and now our mail is delivered in the afternoon instead of the morning.
