I FULLY realise as to why Bridport residents are ‘up in arms’ about the proposed cuts to the town’s bus services. (Bridport News, September 19) However, the proposal is not unexpected as it is simply an extension of the coalition government’s policy of deregulation and privatisation.

Under that policy, the concept of public service is dismissed in favour of profits to be made out of any service provided, regardless of the effect it has on either the local community or the environment.

For example, in the photo in last week’s Bridport News, it showed at least 12 passengers on a local bus travelling into Bridport.

Of course they may all have a car, but even if they did, whoever made the decision to cut local bus services has not been into Bridport on a Saturday morning where parking is at a premium and they would just add to the chaos.

On the other hand, if they did not have a car, it would need at least four cars rather than one bus to get them into town, again adding to the congestion.

In fact, rather than cutting local bus services, local residents should be encouraged to use the facility which would not only improve the environment, but allow local residents the time and space to meet friends and enjoy a natter over a cup of coffee or a pint without worrying about if their lift will arrive or their parking ticket overrunning.
