I AM glad that our town council has voted to ask the district council to halt the auction of the East Street toilet block.
Our town relies, for its prosperity to a considerable extent, on the business brought into the town by all the visitors who choose to come here because we have such excellent local traders and market, as well as the many visitors who come here to enjoy their holidays and days out with all we have to offer.
They will need easily accessible, quality public conveniences.
If they cannot find these they may well decide not to come here again or to tell their friends to do so.
We have already lost the centrally placed toilets below the town hall, replaced only by the inadequate building in South Street car park.
And we have lost the use of the East Street block for too long now.
The permanent loss of these necessary facilities would lead to a loss of revenue for both town and local traders.
We cannot afford to let them go. Our council needs our support in ensuring that this does not happen.
