ONCE again a fatal road accident has lead to cries for a change of road layout, a reduction in speed limit or both.

When will we acknowledge that the major cause of any ‘accident’ is the human action?

I frequently drive along the A35 and there is a portion where it is not unusual for vehicles to shoot past me at 70mph or, more, when I am doing 55-60.

I am sure that whether the speed limit is 60 or 50 will be quite irrelevant to them.

Reducing it to 50 will merely cause more frustration to reasonable drivers, just as frustration can be caused by applying 20mph limits in a school area during weekends and holiday periods when there is not a pupil in sight.

I also have occasion to enter the A35 in the westbound direction from Uploders and although it is frequently not easy, I have found that with patience I can get in without hazard to either myself or other drivers. The only way to reduce accidents would be to take on the irresponsible, impatient, inconsiderate driver, and that will never happen, so responsible drivers will have to continue to drive within their capabilities and to expect the unexpected.
