The pattern is always the same. A central revenue-collecting organisation such as Dorset County Council wants to squeeze more money out of the public, so it invents a scheme to do so.

It knows this will be unpopular, so in an attempt to hide its motives, it justifies its plan using anodyne but essentially content-free expressions.

In this case, DCC has thought of replacing free one-hour parking in Bridport with a pay-and-display scheme.

We are told that this will ‘promote economic growth’ and ‘make these town centres safer, more attractive and generally nicer to visit’.

It is insulting that DCC believes it can fool the public with this tactic. It cannot and it has not.
