LYME REGIS 1

UPOTTERY 2

There was late drama at the Davey Fort in the Devon and Exeter Premier Division when a stoppage time penalty gave visitors Upottery the points against Lyme Regis, writes John Davis.

Lyme settled into the game early looking most dangerous on the counter attack with Josh Daines, Josh Rawlins and Mike Calverley prominent.

It was Calverley who put them in front when he scored directly from a corner which swung in by the far post.

The home side’s back five looked sound throughout the game with Sam Waddon doing a solid man marking job on Upottery’s leading scorer.

A deflected shot which looped up over the head of goalkeeper Will Meech got the visitors level, the referee over-ruling the offside flag that was shown.

There were then a flurry of Lyme chances from Rawlins and Calverley and also new signing Jacob Parsons when he was introduced off the bench.

The game looked likely to end in stalemate until deep into added time.

For the first time during the afternoon, the Lyme backline failed to deal with a long through ball and when Meech brought a forward down a penalty kick was awarded and promptly converted.

Stefan Taylor, Lyme Regis manager, said: “It was such a good performance by all thirteen players involved. They showed great attitude, passion, commitment and work rate.”

“It was devastating to lose in added time. The boys worked hard and stuck to the plan. A point would have been a fair result. We’re so close.”

This Saturday Lyme Regis entertain Dorset Premier League outfit Hamworthy Recreation Reserves in the Dorset Senior Cup kick off 1.30pm.
