ALPHINGTON & COUNTESS WEAR 235-9 (9pts) lost to UPLYME & LYME REGIS 238-5 (19pts) by five wickets.

A CENTURY from Joe Elsworth and an all-round contribution from Preston Hilless were the stand-out features of Uplyme’s five-wicket win over promotion-seeking Alphington and Countess Wear in Devon League C Division East.

Elsworth maintained his consistent form this season with a score of 106 while Hilless followed up a four-wicket haul with a half century.

Put into bat, the home side were 94-5 at one stage but rallied to get over the 200 mark, the major offerings coming from Toby Jones (50), Jack Mills (46) and Tynan Hill (40).

Uplyme’s improvised bowling attack, which included regular wicket-keeper Alfie Jacques, did well to limit the target total with Hilless taking the honours with 4-36 off his eight overs.

In reply, the visitors had an early setback but Hilless (59) and Elsworth then came together to put on over 100 before the second wicket fell.

Elsworth was quick to punish any waywardness in the home attack especially from Will Ruddell and he included eight fours and six sixes in a dominant display of power hitting.

With Daniel Magee (21) and Sam Farrow (25no) also chipping in with useful runs later on, Uplyme were able to pass the total with wickets in hand and several overs to spare.

Uplyme, who have been drawn at home to Ottery St. Mary in the next phase of the Ivor Dewdney Corinthian Cup, entertain Sidmouth Seconds on Saturday (1pm).
