LAPFORD 1

LYME REGIS 2

LYME Regis caused a stir in the Devon & Exeter League Premier Division with a 2-1 win away to Lapford.

Kevin Turner’s men had conceded six goals in each of their first two games but gave a vastly improved display away to the former champions.

Lyme’s gains were evident in a first half in which they competed well with Lapford, although they were on the edge of going 1-0 down in the second half.

Lapford won a penalty but keeper Will Meech rescued the situation with a brilliant save.

His efforts proved a further catalyst for Lyme, who set striker Mike Calverley away to opening the scoring.

George King levelled on 70 minutes for the hosts but Lyme steadied themselves and fought on, even with a sin bin for Ben Turner.

Remarkably, they managed to find a winner while playing with ten men as Tyler Allen notched his first goal in Lyme colours.

Speaking to the Bridport News, Turner said: “I’m really pleased with the result, it’s the first time I’ve gone up there and beaten them.

“They had the better of the first half but we were better in the second half. We scored with the ten men, which was pleasing.

“We really needed it. Driving back on the bus I said: ‘Remember how this feels’ because it was a damn sight better than the Colyton game!”

Lyme host bottom side Elmore Seconds on Saturday (3pm).
