Lyme Regis Golf Club staged their annual Golf Week in weather which was, in the main, ideal for good golf.
With a full field of participants from as far afield as Dorking in Surrey and Tenerife in the Canary Islands, the competitions were varied with a range of excellent prizes on offer for both home and visiting players.
First event of the week, was an individual stableford competition which had some excellent scores carded in both of the men’s competitions with some creditable scores also recorded by the visitors in the ladies’ division.
Yet again Ed Lawrence of Lyme Regis carded an exceptional score with 41 points but was narrowly beaten into second place by Richard Lawrence on countback.
The men’s visitors’ division saw R Paul of Dorking score an excellent 40 points to take the honours over P McLaughlin of Bramshaw Golf Club, on countback.
The ladies’ visitors’ competition was won by club-mate J McLaughlin with 36 points.
The next day saw the first of the team events in the form of a three-ball-two-best scores event.
With fairways giving good run and greens running true, the visiting team of B Dickinson, I Morgan and T Chilcott from Bramshaw Golf Club, in the heart of the New Forest, recorded an exceptional 85 points to achieve first place over the team from MacDonald Portal Premier Golf Club (75).
Next was a mixed Texas Scramble.
Inevitably, the scores were again impressive and saw locals from Bridport and Lyme golf clubs achieve top spot with 57.4.
Second place went to Fingle Glen Golf Club in Exeter with 58.2.
Following the day’s golf, a full house sat down in the evening to enjoy a quiz, hosted by clubhouse manager David Astill, which saw victory go to local team The Who. The following day’s four-ball-better-ball event also saw some very impressive scores with the visiting team of A Vickery and J Ansell from Enmore taking first place with 47 points over club colleagues June Symcox and Steph Bristow with 46.
In the home division, current club vice-captain Steve Phillips, partnered by Neil Smith, achieved first place with 41 points.
A change in the weather greeted the next day with sunny periods interspersed by heavy rain showers.
However, while the golfers may have been a little wet on the outside their enthusiasm and spirit were by no means dampened and this was reflected in the scores in the individual stableford event, which saw A Frankum of Honiton card a very creditable 38 points to win the visitors’ division.
In the ladies’ visitors’ division L Pinnick of Bramshaw Golf Club also scored 38 points to achieve first place.
The home division spoils went to Roger Seed with 36 points, who narrowly beat son George on countback.
The final golf event of the week was a mixed progressive Bowmaker, which again produced some excellent scores from both visitors and home golfers alike.
The visiting division was won by the team of Alice Robinson, John Ansell, Alan Vickery and Stephanie Bristow from Enmore with 114 points, over a team from Churston Golf Club, Brixham.
The top home team were Matt Searle, Keith Gibson, Ian Hobson and Mike Stockwell with 110 points.
With all of the on-course activity satisfactorily concluded, the highly successful week was concluded with the prize giving and dinner attended by over 80 visiting and home golfers.
