THE Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club men were confronted with difficult conditions for the Mathews Cup on Sunday, writes Peter Crowter.
There was a strong gusty wind with occasional rain for this four-ball-better-ball Stableford competition off ¾ handicap. Thirty-one teams took part and coming top of the pile by just one point were Karl and Mike McGrady with 39 points.
Result 1 Karl McGrady (19) and Mike McGrady (16) 39 points; 2 (after countback) Andrew Blackmore (21) and Steve Baker (17) 38; 3 Derek Christison (20) and John Legg-Bagg (14) 38.
Steve Baker was the only player to record a two. This was on the sixth.

AFTER a couple of damp and misty days the more mature men of the club enjoyed a day of unbroken sunshine for their Stableford competition in the morning and their home match against Came Down in the afternoon.
Due to the match later in the day the morning competition was a self-entry single division competition and the fine weather produced some good results with the top four men carding scores in the 40s.
Scoring was very tight at the top with only three points separating the six money winners, Gil Roberts managing to take top spot on countback with 41 points from Colin Warnett. There was not such a tight finish in the afternoon match, which resulted in a decisive 5-1 win for the home team.
Result 1 (after countback) Gil Roberts (23) 41 points; 2 Colin Warnett (22) 41; 3 (Acb,) Jeff Webster (27) 40; 4 Malcolm Larwence (11) 40; 5 (acb) Jim Rogers (20) 38; 6 Terry Kearley (18) 38.

WHEN clouds lie like a grey blanket just above the head at this time of the year there is a dankness in the air that seeps into the bone, writes Lyn Hargrave.
It was thus on Tuesday when 38 ladies went out to play a stableford for the Stephens Cup.
Some found the damp ladened air difficult whilst others threw off the 'blanket' and hit the course running.
Julie Oliver for the second consecutive week had no problem carding a extremely good 40pts dropping her playing handicap to 12, ably backed up by Maureen Hicks on 37pts with Di Loving in third place with 36pts.
Meanwhile, last week, Nicky Stone and Lyn Jessop won their match against Sherborne in the Daily Mail Foursomes and will now go forward to play in the next round.
