Uplyme went out of the Devon Senior Cup after a 3-1 defeat to Watcombe Wanderers.

Even though the Wanderers play in a much higher division, Uplyme matched them tactically and physically in the first half with a goal from Josh Frewin levelling the scores at 1-1 with the move of the match.

Matt Young opened up the home defence, Alex Jones fed James Souter, playing for the first time this season, and when he confused defenders by leaving the ball, Frewin added the finish.

A defensive slip allowed Watcombe to lead 2-1 at the break and they took advantage of another error to add a third before the end, despite having a player shown a straight red card for a particularly reckless challenge.

Manager Pete Blandamer said: “They were worth their win as we couldn’t really get going in the second half due to their physical tactics. In that regard, they played their own game style and won.

“At fifty minutes they brought on a midfielder who was playing in the National League at Truro last season and that was the difference in the two teams.”

Uplyme are back at Venlake for a Devon and Exeter League Division Four match on Saturday when Upottery Reserves are the visitors. Kick off is at 2.15 pm.
