Teignmouth AFC 2

MacLauchlan, 38, Rowe, 46

Bridport got off to a disappointing start to the new season following a 0-2 defeat to Teignmouth at St Mary's Field.

For all their effort and commitment, the Bees just could not break down some resolute defending from the visitors who took all three points with goals at key moments in the game.

The home side dominated the early stages with Teignmouth quick to get everyone back behind the ball whenever danger threatened.

Bridport’s Luke King got forward to head wide from a corner at the far post and then Sol Ayunga was crowded out as he tried several efforts on goal.

Daniel Sheehy volleyed over following a long throw-in routine before Riley Weedon had a low drive well saved by visiting goalkeeper Zach Lee.

There were twenty minutes on the clock before Teignmouth began to threaten and then Bridport goalkeeper Jordan Scadding needed to be quickly off his line to nullify several dangerous through balls.

Fred Parsons just failed to get his shot away when well placed inside the box before the visitors stunned the home crowd by taking the lead in the 38th minute with their first meaningful attack.

A swerving drive from Danny Carroll was well parried by Scadding at full stretch but the ball fell kindly for the incoming Piers MacLauchlan and he fired into the roof of the net.

There was a further shock for the Bees just a minute after the re-start. Teignmouth won a corner on the left and from Jack Baxter’s in-swinging cross, Haydn Rowe moved in unopposed to side-foot the ball home.

Ayunga’s touch then let him down as he was about to shoot in the box before a series of on-target Bridport efforts were blocked before Lee finally managed to hold on to the ball.

Then an effort from substitute Joe Charles grazed a head before hitting the post with the rebound being blazed well wide of the target.

The Bees went close again as a throw-in was helped on by Ayunga and Harley Brook headed into the arms of Lee.

Teignmouth enjoyed their best spell late in the game especially following the introduction of the pacy substitute George Mullford who often operated as a lone raider.

Mullford almost got his side’s third goal with a header that came down off the crossbar and minutes later he struck an upright with a shot from out on the right.

Bridport are at home again on Tuesday, kick off 7.45 p.m. when Sidmouth Town are the visitors to St. Mary’s Field.
