DORCHESTER TOWN 4

Koszela 1, Balmer 22, Toms 100, 116

BRIDPORT 2

Weedon 79, Ayunga 90+3

DORCHESTER Town needed extra-time to reach the Dorset Senior Cup quarter-finals, beating a spirited Bridport 4-2 at the Avenue Stadium.

Olaf Koszela and Olly Balmer goals put the Magpies in cruise control but an improving Bridport side flourished thereafter, late Riley Weedon and Sol Ayunga goals taking a stunned Dorchester to extra-time.

Lewis Toms then netted his first senior goals in the next 30 minutes to spare Dorchester’s blushes against a side ranked three divisions below them.

Dorchester made eight changes in total to the side that began the 1-0 win over Salisbury on Saturday, as only Alex Moyse, Koszela and Kieran Douglas kept their places.

In came Harry Dillon, Harvey-Joe Bertrand, Louie Slough, Connor Callow, Keith Emmerson, Mike Lilley, Balmer and Brin Doyle.

Ryan Hall, Tiago Sa, Callum Buckley, Jordan Ngalo, Charlie Gunson, Matty Neale and Alfie Stanley missed out completely.

Jordi Foot took a place on the bench alongside under-23 stars Toms, Ieuan Turner and Matheus Oliveira.

For Bridport, boss Chris Herbst made four changes to the side that started the 3-0 win over Plymouth Marjon on Saturday.

There was no place in the squad for James Cox or Jack Wright, with Lewis Howe and Jake Childs dropping to the bench.

In came Weymouth Under-23 players Josh Grace and Owen Peart, with Luke King and Kieren Daniels also getting the nod.

Joining Howe and Childs on the bench were Dan Baggs, Dan Peart and Weymouth Under-23 midfielder Mo Hereka.

In a breakneck start to the game, Bridport wanted a penalty after Tom Richardson went down in the box following a long throw.

Nothing was given and Koszela raced upfield, skinning Josh Baker and then planting a lethal finish past Jordon Scadding just 49 seconds in.

Former Dorchester striker Sol Ayunga shot wide for Bridport before a fortuitous second for Balmer, whose first Magpies goal came via a huge deflection that wrong-footed Scadding.

Bridport grew into the game as Ayunga shot wide again and Owen Peart rattled the bar with a dipping free-kick, beating Dillon all ends up.

Ayunga rifled inches wide of the near post and Koszela tested Scadding at the other end as the free-flowing nature of the match made for a very watchable tie.

Bridport came close to a goal just before half-time as Kieren Daniels’ volley was headed off the line by Harvey-Joe Bertrand but the Bees could not break through.

Herbst brought on Dan Baggs and Dan Peart for Ryan Gall and Josh Baker at the break and Bridport continued to pose Dorchester problems.

Ayunga neglected to trouble an unguarded goal after beating Dillon to the ball, Weedon blazed over and the superb Owen Peart tested Dillon with a brilliant effort heading for the top corner.

Owen Peart worked Dillon again before Dorchester handed first-team debuts to Oliveira and Turner.

Big chances came and went at either end as Ayunga was gifted a free shot at Dillon, only to aim straight at the keeper, and Balmer dithered on his shot after good combination play with Koszela.

However, Bridport got the goal they fully deserved when Weedon snuck a free-kick home inside the far post, with Dillon getting fingertips to it.

That set up an uncomfortable final 11 minutes for Dorchester in which both Balmer and Weedon went down claiming penalties in either box, their appeals once more waved away.

And Koszela really should have put the game to bed in the 89th minute but the striker could only slice his volley wide after a surging run and cross from sub Toms.

He was punished for that miss when Ayunga sent a rocket past Dillon from 25 yards in the 93rd minute to force extra-time – and no less than Bridport deserved.

Dorchester were suitably shocked by Bridport’s stoppage-time equaliser and stepped their level up in the first extra period, netting a third on 100 minutes.

Balmer’s clever run to the byline worked space for Koszela and the ball found its way to Toms, the under-18s midfielder burying a sweet finish 12 yards out to put Bridport behind again.

Dorchester nearly added a fourth but for fabulous last-ditch defending to block Koszela’s path to goal after the forward beat Scadding to a long ball.

Dorchester’s evening soured further when Balmer limped off injured, putting the Magpies down to ten, but the numbers were evened up when Owen Peart saw a straight red for a tangle with Koszela.

Bridport pushed Baggs up top in search of a third goal and the defender led huge cries for handball in the area against Bertrand, shortly before Dorchester made it 4-2.

Toms won possession on the right and set Koszela away, Scadding making an agile low stop but only pushing the ball towards the charging Toms who scored and clattered into the post in one motion.

Dorchester eventually saw the game out with little fuss – but will be seething at how the game panned out.
