BRIDPORT Gig Rowing Club attended Weymouth’s annual regatta with 12 Bridport crews entered including a junior crew.
The club saw some of their best ever results at this regatta to date, finishing a brilliant third overall and putting themselves at the top of the Jurassic League.
The competition began with the ladies’ races, the A crews were first off the line rowing round the two stroke-side turn course in Weymouth Bay.
Bridport ladies A finished third out of 14 boats, maintaining their strong form from the World Championships earlier in the month.
Conditions were excellent, with a breeze making for a hard push down the final leg to the finish line.
Next off were the ladies B, Bridport achieved a strong and controlled start which put them at the front of the pack.
The crew pushed on and stayed up front round the turns, pulling away down the final leg to finish first, their best result of the season so far. The ladies C race followed this, in which Bridport came in third after rowing a very consistent race.
The men’s races followed shortly, the C crew rowed hard to achieve sixth, while the men’s B secured eighth.
Bridport men’s A battled a tough race with some clashes round the turns to go over the line in fifth place.
Next was the turn of the juniors, who row a shorter course with just one turn.
The race began and there appeared to be some confusion surrounding the course route.
This resulted in crews rowing different courses and going over the line at different times.
Due to this issue, Weymouth decided to give each crew one point and not declare a winner.
This was a shame as Bridport’s junior crew won the race, rowing the course they were told at the start line.
The ladies and men’s veterans (over-40) raced in the afternoon and both secured fourth place, as did the ladies’ supervets (over-50).
The men’s supervets finished in fifth and the day was rounded off with the mixed race.
The Bridport crew gave all the energy they had left to achieve second place just behind Weymouth.
Consistent results across the categories left Dagger (Bridport) in third place overall.
Teign and Weymouth came first and second respectively.
In the Jurassic League, of which Weymouth was the first event, Bridport ended the day top as only certain races counted towards this.
Bridport squads are now in training for upcoming events, with Bridport Regatta being held on Sunday, July 2 at West Bay.
