THE Bridport & West Dorset Club's men’s Sunday competition was a three-man Team Open, a medal off three-quarter handicap with two scores counting on each hole.
The weather was fine for the 35 teams and conditions resulted in some low scoring. The team of Mike Savage, Spike Miller and Don McAllister came first with a score of 131.
RESULTS
1 Mike Savage, Spike Spiller & Don McAllister (Bridport) 131, 2 Dave Rendell, Kevin Pragnell & Mike Brake (Bridport) 133, 3 Phil Dowell, Dave Franks & Graham Letts (Bridport & Traditions) 134, 4 Graham Hunt, Mike Franklin & Steve Pratt (Bridport) 136, 5 Steve Broadey, Paul Broadey & Steve Lamb (China Fleet) 138.
Nearest the pin on 6th: Tim Woodrow.
Nearest the pin on 18th: Steve Pratt.
Veterans’ Section
THE veterans’ Thursday competition was a bogey, not the most endearing title to a golf format and not the most popular competition.
The object is to compete against the course where, with the aid of your handicap, you score a point for every birdie, knock one off for every bogey and maintain the status quo with a par.
The idea is to leave the course on the plus side but on Thursday only six of the 48 players walked off in profit with another four breaking even.
Two men achieved a three-point profit with Martin Oliver edging Alex Millar into the runner-up spot on count-back.
RESULTS
1 (onc) Martin Oliver (20) +3, 2 Alex Millar (28) +3, 3 (onc) Terry Kearley (18) +2, 4 Roy Gill (13) +2, 5 (onc) Malcolm Peach (24) +1.
n Martin and Millar received a one-shot handicap cut.
Inter-club match results: Parkstone at home (won 4-2), Lyme Regis away (lost 4-2).
Carnival Cup
THE Carnival Cup, a Stableford competition open to all club members, produced a remarkable result.
One would have expected Andy Dennis (5) to walk away with the silverware with 43 points, but amazingly this was five points short of the winning score.
Steve Pitcher (17), after a pointless first hole, paraded on to take the Carnival Cup with a massive score of 48 points.
Ruth Donovan (20) and Julie Oliver (14) came third and fourth respectively, both with 40 points. Donovan took third on count-back.
Pitcher received a three-shot handicap cut, Donovan and Oliver two shots and Dennis one shot.
Junior Open
THIRTY-NINE players took part in the Junior Open at Bridport & West Dorset Golf Club.
The weather was sunny and warm and the winner, all the way from Madrid, was Oskar Letts with a score of 94-27-67.
Second, much closer to home, was Kieran Mulhall (78-10-68) from Bridport while Canford Magna’s Konstantinos Parthensis (97-28-69) was third.
The other top performers on were Came Down’s Sam Roles, who was first scratch with 71, Sturminster Marshall’s Rebecca Martin (81-12-69), who was first girl, and Weymouth’s Aston Williams, nearest the pin on the sixth.
