Sam Ryder has been named as Great Britain's representative for the Eurovision Song Contest for 2022.

The singer-songwriter has made a name for himself on the platform TikTok, with his singing talents getting him the spot on Eurovision.

Now he will take to the stage in Italy later this year after rock band Måneskin took the crown in 2021 with their hit song "Zitti e buoni".

However, some people might not have heard of Ryder before this announcement, so here's a brief profile to get you up to speed.

Ryder has gained huge popularity on TikTok, having amassed 12 million followers and 100 million likes on the platform.

As mentioned previously he made a name for himself singing snippets of songs during lockdown.

His upload of a cover of the song 'If I Ain't Got You' caught the attention of global stars Justin Bieber and Alicia Keys. 

He signed to the label Parlophone shortly afterwards and released his debut EP in 2021 and so far has gained over 100 million global streams.

One of Ryder's viral hits on TikTok was the song 'Space Man' which will be used as his song for his Eurovision performance.

Ryder will be hoping to improve on Great Britain's finishing place in the last two Eurovisions.

In 2021, James Newman's entry Embers received the dreaded "nil points" and Michael Rice came bottom in 2019 with ballad Bigger Than Us.

What did Sam Ryder have to say?

Speaking to Radio Newsbeat he said: "I love Eurovision. I think it's such a privilege to be able to do it.

"I don't want to let the stigma or fear of coming at a certain place in a table stop me from doing something and being a part of something that I enjoy so much.

"As long as I can go to Eurovision and know in my heart of hearts I'm going to do the best job I can then everything else is out of my control."

The Eurovision Song Contest Grand Final will be broadcast on BBC One and BBC iPlayer on Saturday, May 14 at 8pm.
