Broadchurch: Who killed Danny Latimer?

By any measure, ITV drama Broadchurch has been a success. With its sweeping views of West Bay, distracting accents and never-ending list of suspects, the murder mystery has us all glued to the screen on Monday nights. (And if it hasn't, just stop reading now. Don't wait til until we've finished and then post a comment telling us how much you don't care. )

So who did kill Danny? Creator Chris Chibnall told the Bridport News this week that: "You will get answers. It may or may not be the ending you expect. But it's the one I had in mind from the start, and clues have been scattered throughout."

With that in mind, we're taking a look at what we think are the four most likely suspects (and explaining why we've ruled a couple out.) Feel free to tell us why you think we're wrong in the comments...

Rev Peter Coates

It breaks our hearts to think that good old reliable Rory could be a killer. But there's certainly something. He likes to go for walks in the middle of the night. He just happens to come upon people while he's on said walks. And he goes out on those walks with a backpack and a hoodie. Does he or doesn't he have a thing for young boys? He did give the police Tom Miller's computer - but if he's such a computer expert, could he have faked the damaged hard drive and the email record that got the Doctor DI Hardy so excited at the end of last week's episode? 

Nigel Carter

Poor old Nige. Mum collects keepsakes from dead boys, dad was a paedophile. But what is he doing with all those guns? What sort of a person carries a crossbow round in the back of their van? And Susan Wright seems very certain she saw him on the beach with Danny's body. But: 

Joe Miller

It won't have escaped your notice that DS Miller's husband could easily have been mistaken from Nigel from a distance. He seems placid and reliable enough, but: was there a pointer when DS MIller asked Susan Wright last week how she could not have known what was going on it his own house?

What's he been doing when he should have been painting the marital bedroom? Did Rev Coates tell him about Tom and Danny having an argument, as he claimed last week? Is this screenshot genuine?

- and if so, could Mum also be Dad? He was very irate when DI Hardy tried to talk to Tom at Jack's wake and he wasn't terribly happy when Ellie went looking for Tom's computer. Although to be fair to him, that could have been because it was the middle of the night. All of which also leads us to

Tom Miller (with assistance from Dad)

Why wouldn't he tell the police he didn't like Danny, or any of the things he obviously knows about Danny's secret money-making life? What's on his computer? What's he been doing out poaching with dodgy Dean? Did he shoot Danny with Nigel's crossbow in a fit of pique and is his dad helping him cover it up? And again, was there a pointer when Ellie, interviewing Susan last week, told her that had her son done something she would do her utmost to protect him? 

People we don't think it is:

Dodgy Dean the drug-dealing boyfriend: Too obvious. Plus, his slip that Danny had been out poaching with him and Nigel seem like a genuine one - is he clever enough for that to have been a double bluff? 

Kevin the postman: I was sure he was going to make a reappearance after now-dead Jack reported that he'd seen Danny arguing with him on the day of his death. But it's a bit late now for a whole new plot strand. Isn't it?

Lucy Stevens: Ellie's sister. Reporter Olly's mum. Popped up for two minutes to claim she knew something about Danny's death but wouldn't say what without a load of money. She might yet hold a vital piece of the puzzle, but it's unlikely she's the killer.

Steve Connelly aka the mad psychic: Do we believe he's psychic? He's said nothing so far that persuades us that he is. Could he be the killer? Well, he knew/guessed about the boat. But if you were pretending to be a psychic, guessing at "water" when a body is found on a beach would be a pretty reliable start. We think he's a red herring.
