RNLI lifeguards will begin their safety patrols of Lyme Regis beach this weekend.
Teams along the Dorset coast will be providing patrols, beach safety information, advice on any potential hazards and first aid.
They will be on Lyme’s main beach for the peak holiday season from Saturday until September 4.
In the peak of the summer season, 100 beaches in the South West will be patrolled by RNLI lifeguards, including 21 in Dorset.
Barry Heathfield, divisional lifeguard manager for Dorset, said: “Our lifeguards are busy with their two-week induction schedule, which ensures all are trained up to the same high quality. Topics include rescue theory and practice, as well as communication skills and first aid.
“Ninety-five per cent of a lifeguard’s role is preventative, and we urge all visitors to visit the beaches and seek out the lifeguards to gain vital local knowledge.”
Last year, lifeguards at Lyme Regis dealt with 128 incidents and assisted 131 people.
Simon Crayfourd, lifeguard manager for Dorset and East Devon, said: “While we’re looking forward to seeing lots of people enjoying the coast this summer, there are a number of steps people can take to keep themselves out of danger.”
Here are some beach tips: • Swim at a lifeguarded beach, between the red and yellow flags • Never use inflatables in strong winds or rough seas • Check tide times before you go • If you get into trouble, stick your hand in the air and shout for help • If you see someone else in trouble, tell a lifeguard. If you can’t see a lifeguard, call 999 or 112 and ask for the Coastguard.
