THE campaign to secure £60,000 Lottery funding for The Hub is building and the community is encouraged to get behind the bid.
The project is competing to be crowned the winner in the Jubilee People’s Millions to help transform the former boys club building in Church Street into a new youth centre.
Six finalists will be televised on ITV Westcountry News from June 27 to 30, with The Hub going head-to-head with Portland Gig Rowing Club’s under-16s section.
The two projects will be appealing for viewers’ support in a phone vote on Tuesday, June 28 – dubbed ‘Hub Tuesday’.
Project leaders are appealing for community backing to help raise the profile of the campaign, starting on Sunday with a record-breaking sing-along attempt.
Led by the Woodroffe School, people of all ages are invited to help break the world record of singing a continuous round of the song Frere Jacques.
The current record stands at 220 people, but it is hoped hundreds more will line the Cobb from midday on Sunday to take part.
Organiser and the school’s head of art Dot Wood said: “We will be starting our attempt on the Cobb and the line of singers will be filmed as the round progresses along the Cobb and then the Cart Road, enlisting as many people as we can to join the line.”
Dads and their families are encouraged to get involved on what will be Father’s Day The film will be broadcast on YouTube, where other videos have been uploaded to back the bid, including an edited version of Lyme’s fugitive wallaby ‘Wally’.
Around 100 volunteers will also be needed on Hub Tuesday to spread the word about the phone vote.
The telephone vote numbers will be released at 9am on the day and lines will close at midnight, following The Hub’s appearance on the regional news at 6pm.
The Hub’s project manager Fran Williams is appealing for volunteers to publicise the telephone number by text and email, and to canvas towns and villages across Dorset.
Mrs Williams said: “We need your vote to turn this derelict building – that’s been closed for five years – into an amazing place full of opportunity and improve thousands of young peoples lives in West Dorset.”
She added: “We really need you to make The Hub, Lyme Regis, your priority on Tuesday, June 28.”
