THE Hub youth club will battle it out on television to win thousands of pounds of Lottery funding.

The project is one of six finalists competing for up to £60,000 in the Jubilee People’s Millions.

It will be up against Portland Gig Rowing Club’s under-16s section, which needs funding for a new wooden boat.

The competition, to be televised on ITV West Country evening news, marks the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

The funding would help refurbish the former Lyme Regis Club for Young People building in Church Street, which was bought by Lyme Regis Development Trust last year.

A group of volunteers have been working for the past few months on a marketing campaign surrounding the Lottery bid, in what has only been referred to until now as ‘Project X’.

Expect to see a blitz of promotion around the town in the coming weeks, including promotion videos on YouTube, a world record attempt involving the whole community, and an ‘eye-grabbing stunt’ to attract attention.

The six finalists will be broadcast on the regional news from June 27 to 30, with The Hub and Portland Gig Rowing Club featuring on Tuesday, June 28.

The two groups will appeal for viewers’ support with the public voting by phone.

Four £60,000 awards are up for grabs in the region, including a bonus award for the runner-up who receives the most phone votes across the week.

Project development officer Fran Williams said: “The point of the campaign is very simple – to get as many phone votes as possible made for Lyme on Hub Tuesday and, to achieve that, The Hub needs you.

“Each person will be allowed to vote up to 10 times, if we like, but if every pupil at Woodroffe and all of our residents make just one call for Lyme then we’ll be well on the way to getting the prize that will make a long dream come true.

“Community caring is one of the great strengths of Lyme Regis and surrounding areas and we know everybody will follow the fantastic lead of the local press and pull together to help.”

The telephone vote numbers will be released at 9am on June 28, and calls will cost 11p from a landline.

Organisers are asking everyone in the town to help promote the phone vote date by appealing to friends for support on Facebook and displaying campaign posters.
