A TEENAGER threatened to throw herself off The Cobb in an early hours rescue drama.
Police, coastguards and paramedics were all called to Lyme Regis harbour after concerned friends raised the alarm.
Coastguards and paramedics stood by as police officers talked to the 17-year-old girl who was standing on the edge of the harbour wall.
She was threatening to jump into the sea in the early hours of Saturday morning.
One of her friends called an ambulance, which requested assistance from the police and back-up from Portland Coastguard.
The South Western Ambulance Service confirmed it received a call at 12.37am and paramedics attended the scene but were not required.
A spokesman said: “They were stood down by the police who dealt with the matter.”
Dorset Police confirmed they received a call from the ambulance service at 12.41am.
A spokesman said: “Dorset Police received a call from the ambulance service requesting police support because a female was threatening to jump from the pier.”
The spokesman said an officer searched the area and found the girl, who was with a friend.
Lyme Regis Coastguard Rescue Officers were sent to the scene at 12.45am due to the incident being on the coast.
Deputy station officer Gerry Bearpark said: “We were called out in response with the police.
“Her friends were concerned about her. She left and they got worried about her.
“We were there to help the police in case anything did go untoward. The police found the girl, they chatted with her and they sent her back with her friends.
“In that situation, had she jumped or gone in the water, we’ve got life jackets to put on and we would swim to her.”
A police spokesman said at just after 1am the teenager was described as ‘safe and well’.
The spokesman added: “If life is in danger someone should call 999.”
The harbour is the responsibility of West Dorset District Council, whose leisure and tourism manager Nick Thornley said: “We are pleased that this matter was dealt with by the police and the coastguard and that no-one came to any harm.”
The Cobb has been the scene for other incidents of this kind in recent years.
Last year a two-hour search was launched at the harbour to find a suicidal teenager with a knife.
Police, a search helicopter, coastguards and the lifeboat all helped in the search for the 17-year-old who was later found safe and well.
In 2009 a Lyme Regis man drowned after he jumped off the Cobb at sunrise.
He was seen standing at the end of the Cobb before running and plunging into the sea.
