LYME’S polluted Church Beach has received more damaging national publicity, it has been reported.
The Marine Conservation Society’s Good Beach Guide 2010 showed that the beach failed to meet basic water quality standards.
It has been suggested that it be declassified as a bathing beach, amid claims it is not commonly used for this purpose.
Coun Sally Holman said the town is continuing to suffer from bad national press publicity.
A survey will be carried out throughout the peak season to determine the level of use before deciding whether to de-designate.
Town clerk Mike Lewis said: “Councillors will be able to discuss the way forward with regard to de-designation or not.”
The council has urged the Environment Agency and South West Water to renew efforts to det-ermine why the water is polluted.
