A TEENAGE girl was suspended after her school refused to let her go to the toilet while she was on her period.
Scarlett Ridley, 14, and her mum, Amy, have hit out at Corfe Hills School after a ‘humiliating’ ordeal that led to her suspension.
On Friday, November 7, Scarlett asked her female teacher if she could use the toilet because she was on her period. The teacher refused, “forcing her to sit in her own filth.”
Amy said: “I am disgusted and appalled by Corfe Hills’ lack of understanding.”
Scarlett was told to wait an hour and a half until her next bathroom break; however, she refused and went to the toilet.
Amy said: “She was then suspended for taking her own hygiene into her hands.”
This was the second time Scarlett had been suspended for using the toilet during her period.
The first incident took place in March 2024, when she raised her hand and asked a male teacher for permission to leave the lesson.
He refused, so she left to find a female teacher, which led to her being placed in isolation and later suspended.
Scarlett’s parents filed a formal complaint against the school, addressing several issues following the first incident.
She said: “I find it shocking that a male teacher in this day and age can be so narrow-minded he won’t allow a young lady to visit the bathrooms to clean herself up.
“We aren’t operating military standards, it’s a school. In fact, even the military would allow a young lady the opportunity to clean herself up.”
Scarlett said she is falling behind in her studies because of the school's “utterly bonkers” isolation and suspension policies.
Amy said: “They don’t want to educate kids that aren’t high performing. If a pupil requires a bit more support or are neurodivergent the getting passed over.
In only two and a half months, Scarlett’s attendance is at 78% as a direct result of suspensions and said she hasn't taken one day off.
Amy added: “She is not a naughty girl; she is just a normal teenager who has been trying to get help from her teachers.”
A spokesperson for Corfe Hills School said: “We encourage pupils to use the toilets before school, during break and lunchtime, as well as after school, to minimise disruption to their learning.
“If a pupil needs a toilet break during a lesson, teachers will request the support of the member of staff on duty to assist if necessary.
“If a pupil requires regular use of the toilet for medical reasons, we issue them with a toilet pass that allows them to leave the lesson as and when they need.
“Our current policy is designed to ensure that pupils can access a toilet when they need to, while ensuring minimal disruption to lessons and learning."
