NEARLY 10 years ago you published a double page spread of old postcards of Lovers’ Grove (I still have a copy!).
I wondered what impact the Vearse Farm development would have on the grove.
Already about 20 metres of trees and bushes have been cleared to make way for access.
How much more will be cleared in future for other reasons? This suggests that some form of protection is needed in the same way that buildings and the street scene can be listed.
Lovers’ Grove is an important part of Bridport’s disappearing heritage; many of the original trees - planted in the 1800s - are now at the end of their lives, though rotting stumps provide habitat for many insects and birds.
If it can be protected, I feel a comprehensive plan needs to be drawn up for its restoration so it can continue to give pleasure in years to come.
