A museum volunteer from Bridport is publishing a new book capturing the quirky moments in the town's history.

Tegwyn Jones, 71, has collated 80 illustrated stories that capture some of the more offbeat people, places and events of Bridport.

The book, Quirky Bridport, will be released on Sunday, October 28 with all profits from the sales of the book going towards the community museum.

Mr Jones works in the museum archives and became fascinated by the colourful heritage of the town.

He said: "I kept coming across these great stories from Bridport events that have happened over the years. I thought it would be wonderful to gather these today."

Old postcards, photographs and pictures accompany each story offering a quirky look at the history from eccentric MPs, early Antarctic adventurers, a 1930s circus and modern-day events like the Hat Festival.

When asked what makes Bridport so quirky, Mr Jones said: "It’s both the people and the place.

"There is not only a vibrant art scene but then there's the countryside, its history ropemaking and wild and wacky MPs of the past. It goes all the way back to Bridport's early history when the River Brit was named after the town."

Following his retirement, Mr Jones moved from Somerset to Bridport five years ago. He frequently visited the town to enjoy events at the Electric Palace.

There will be a special launch event for his new book on Sunday, October 27 at 2.30pm at Bridport Museum, featuring a short presentation by the author.

Mr Jones added: "A lot of these stories are very funny and I guarantee everyone who reads it will find something in there that they haven't heard of before.

"It's a lovely town to live in and there are so many interesting things to uncover."

Quirky Bridport will be available to buy at Bridport Museum shop on South Street for £14.90.
