Volunteer drivers are being sought to help provide a much-needed town bus service in Lyme Regis.

As previously reported by the News, the number 71 town bus ceased operation in August after Dorset Council ended the school contract with the bus operator, making it impossible for the service to run.

The removal of the service was a blow for residents, particularly for the elderly who rely on it to get into town.

One elderly Lyme Regis couple even said they were considering moving following the service's termination.

Lyme Regis Town Council has been working to find a replacement service, including inviting proposals from bus operators, which it now says has been ruled out as a 'viable' option.

Instead, the council is now looking for volunteers to run a minibus service, which it will lease or buy.

The mayor, Cllr Philip Evans, said: “We understand how difficult life has become for some of our local residents since the loss of the town bus as they are unable to get into town to do their shopping, get to medical appointments, or simply meet up with friends on the bus.

“The service was a lifeline to many people in this town and the council is absolutely determined to find a solution to ensure they’re not stranded and isolated in their homes.”

"The town council funded the town bus at a cost of £16,000 a year but is prepared to increase its subsidy to secure the future of this vital service.

“The possibility of working with an established bus operator is no longer viable, which isn’t the outcome we were hoping for, but there are other options.

“The town council is now pursuing the idea of acquiring its own vehicle, probably a minibus, and we are asking people who have some time to spare if they are willing to become volunteer drivers."

The days and times of operation of the minibus service are yet to be confirmed and will be dependent on driver availability.

Volunteers will need to be able to commit to at least one day a week and be willing to undergo a DBS check.

Full training will be given and the council will provide the necessary insurance.

The council would particularly like to hear from those with class D1 on their driving licence as this allows holders to drive a minibus with no more than 16 passenger seats.
