West Dorset communities are being warned to prepare for flooding following heavy rainfall.

The Environment Agency has issued a flood alert for the River Axe, near Lyme Regis.

Heavy rainfall in the past twelve hours has led to river levels in the area rising.

This may lead to flooding to low lying land and roads close to the rivers.

The alert covers the rivers Axe, Coly, Yarty, Umborne Brook and coastal streams from Branscombe to Axmouth.

Flooding is also expected for areas near the Upper Frome and Hooke River near Dorchester.

"Take care near the areas of concern and monitor your local weather conditions.

"We are constantly monitoring river levels and this message will be updated on Wednesday morning or earlier if the situation changes."
