A PLEA has gone out to the community to help make the upcoming birthday of a 105-year-old her most memorable yet.

People are being asked to send a birthday card to Joan Cool of Lyme Regis who will turn 105 on Wednesday, October 23.

It is hoped that the birthday girl, a former nurse, who lives at Fairfield House care home in Lyme, will have 105 cards from wellwishers to open on her big day.

The plan has been hatched by staff at Fairfield House to put a big smile on Mrs Cool's face as she reaches the incredible age.

Last year she received more than 90 cards for her 104th birthday and this year it is hoped the target of 105 cards for 105 years can be reached.

Last year people from across the Lyme area sent her cards, including youngsters at Mrs Ethelston’s Primary School in Uplyme.

April Robinson, receptionist and admin worker at Fairfield, said: "Joan has been a long-standing resident at Fairfield and we said that as a care home we want to try and reach 105 cards for this incredible lady.

"Unfortunately she's now on bed rest and stuck in bed so we want to make this birthday as memorable as possible for her. Last year we had some lovely cards from some children saying 'hello Joan' and telling her about themselves.

"Every day is the same for her now being upstairs in her room but every birthday is very special.

"Joan is an amazing lady who has worked extremely hard all of her life. She's a real technical whiz and she loves Facebook.

"I play online solitaire with her and go home and think 'it's my move now'.

"Joan really is a very special individual who's so witty and has such a sense of humour."

Former Yorkshire resident Mrs Cool came to Lyme Regis in 1993 with her husband John, where she joined the Women’s Institute.

In 1943, during the Second World War, she joined the Princess Mary’s Royal Air Force Nursing Service at RAF Halton.

She was later posted to the RAF Hospital in Wroughton, Swindon, which acted as a casualty clearing station for D-Day and marched past the King in the first Battle of Britain Parade.

You can help make Joan Cool's 105th birthday the most special yet by sending a card in time for October 23 to: Resident Joan, Fairfield House Residential Care Home, Charmouth Road, Lyme Regis, DT7 3HH.

All the cards received will be on display in the home for Mrs Cool's celebrations as she spends the big day with family members.
