Motorists are reminded the A35 will close overnight tonight as yet more work is carried out along the road.

Despite overnight closures put in place throughout July, further work will take place during September and October.

Tonight, the Bridport to Axminster stretch of the road is to close from 8pm until 6am tomorrow. This is scheduled to continue until October 5.

The rest of the overnight closures are as follows:

  • Honiton to Axminster - October 7 to October 17

  • Monkey's Jump Roundabout to Stinsford Roundabout, Dorchester - October 25 to October 29

  • Stinsford Roundabout to Bere Regis Roundabout - October 29 to November 1

  • Bridport to Dorchester - November 11 to November 13

A spokesperson National Highways said: “Additional investigations and maintenance work where necessary, is being undertaken before the route is handed back to National Highways.

“Unfortunately, this requires additional closures of the route so work can be undertaken safely and efficiently.

“The work is scheduled overnight when traffic flows are low to cause the least disruption, and every effort is being made to minimise disturbance to local residents and road users during the closures, including combining works, scheduling works to avoid known busy times, and permitting local resident access wherever possible.”

Alex Mawhood, landlady of the Clockhouse Inn in Chideock - which is alongside the A35 - was shocked to hear that more works are due to take place.

She said: "With this pub, we do get a lot of locals and foot traffic which we are very fortunate to have.

"We do get a lot of people passing through from Dorset, Devon and Cornwall for a bite to eat or a drink, and it will add extra time for motorists and will impact business for sure."

It comes as separate roadworks get underway in Bridport town centre. A section of West Street is one way - from the roundabout with Tannery Road and the zebra crossing just outside of Waitrose - and affects traffic heading east into the town. The diversion takes people west to join the A35 at Miles Cross - which will be closed from 8pm due the aforementioned resurfacing work.

And the coast road is currently closed at Abbotsbury Hill so that Dorset Council can carry out carriageway reconstruction works.

Work is expected to be completed by September 29 - but there will be more misery for motorists when Goose Hill, Portesham,  is closed for six weeks from the following day - September 30.

Teams will work on a 200-metre stretch of the B3157 to the west of the village, replacing the main with new plastic pipes, in a project that is scheduled to finish on Friday, November 8.

Concerns were raised to Portesham Parish Council at a meeting also attended by Wessex Water representatives.
