There are miles of queues and lengthy delays on the A35 following a crash this morning.

The crash, between a car and a lorry, happened at the turning to Eype just outside Bridport at around 10.30am.

Initially, the eastbound carriageway was closed, but later on the road was shut in both directions so the vehicles can be recovered. National Highways says it could take until 6pm to resolve.

The A35 is closed closed between Miles Cross junction (Symondsbury) and Crown roundabout (Bridport).

There are queues of traffic on the eastbound carriageway of the A35 stretching as far back as Morcombelake.

A diversion is sending the traffic into Bridport via West Road, meaning the town centre is much busier than usual.

Broad Lane and Skilling Hill are reportedly completely blocked due to drivers diverting in both directions through Eype Lane and South Street.

Traffic is at a standstill along the narrow lane at Higher Eype.

Drivers are advised to find an alternative route.

Traffic is still moving westbound.

A spokesperson for the Charmouth Fire Station said: "We were mobilised at 10.30am to a road traffic collision on the A35 at Bridport along with Bridport Fire Station involving an HGV and a car.

"The HGV had rolled onto its side and the car had damage to its rear quarter. Both drivers were shaken but not badly injured.

"The air ambulance was called for as a precaution, as well as road ambulances and the police.

"Large amounts of smoke were coming from the HGV but this was caused by the refrigeration unit, not fire.

"The scene was handed over to the police and crews returned to the station at 12.30pm.

"There is likely to be very heavy traffic eastbound for a significant time today until the vehicles have been recovered."
