A flat filled with smoke after a phone battery exploded.

One crew from Bridport Fire Station rushed to a flat in South Annings, Burton Bradstock where alarms were sounding on Wednesday, September 18 at 11.13pm.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the property was filled with fumes and smoke.

It is reported that a person tried to remove the battery from a mobile phone causing it to explode.

There were no reports of any injuries and the affected area was ventilated.

A spokesperson for Bridport Fire Station said: "Lithium-ion batteries can be very dangerous when damaged, causing a thermal runaway. The batteries will heat up very quickly causing a chemical reaction which produces even more heat.

"This will cause the battery to vent gases and also catch fire. It can be very difficult to stop this reaction.

"Luckily no one was hurt and no further damage was caused other then to the phone.

"Crews assisted by ventilating the property and giving advice."
