A talk will take place on the history of a market town’s church bells.

The Bridport History Society will welcome Dr Alastair Forbes to host a talk on Thursday, September 12.

Dr Forbes will give the talk titled ‘The Bells of Saint Mary’s Bridport- Their story in the context of the history of the church.’

The eight bells in St Mary’s Church, Bridport, have been ringing for 100 years since they were fully recast in 1924.

Each bell has an inscription from the families who were part of that recasting and renewal of the bells 100 years ago.

The talk will take place at the United Church Hall on East Street in Bridport, with doors open at 2.15pm for a 2.30pm start.

Dr Forbes said: “There have been church bells at St. Mary’s Bridport for hundreds of years. This illustrated talk tells their story, showing how it fits with the history of the church, the town and the nation.”

The society meets on the second Thursday of each month, except for July and August. Membership is open to all starting at £10 for individual members, and £15 for a couple.
