A new autumn exhibition will bring together the works of three different artists from the UK and Norway.

Sladers Yard Gallery in West Bay has announced its new exhibition, titled Sky Lines, which will feature a range of works in different mediums from three artists.

The exhibition will take place from Saturday, September 21 and run through to Saturday, November 3.

Alex Lowery’s new paintings of Portland, Lyme Bay, as well as Orkney, Greece and Sicily are set to introduce bright new colours and an upbeat mood to the gallery.

Born in 1957, Mr Lowery studied at Bath Academy and the Central School of Art in London. He has painted and shown Dorset since 1994. His work is in many distinguished private collections as well as the Dorset County Hospital Art Collection, Great Ormond Street Hospital, St George’s Hospital Tooting and the Fidelity International Art Collection.

A spokesperson for Sladers Yard, said: “A master of light and line, Alex Lowery’s recent paintings continue his fascination with rooflines and planes of colour.

“Confident, unusual colour combinations feel deeply satisfying, poetry that expresses something not put into words before. All aspects of his paintings stem from observation, relating back to the real world as he has seen it.”

He has shown at the west Dorset gallery since it opened in 2006 and lives in Charmouth with the artist, Vanessa Gardiner.

Norwegian ceramicist, Lise Herud Braten, will be showing her work for the first time at the gallery. Based in London, the artists highly textured vessels are said to reflect a strong natural environment.

Born in Oslo, she has been exhibiting in galleries across the UK since 2017 and was also represented by Studio Tashtego in New York since 2021. Lise trained as a Bespoke Women’s Tailor in Norway before coming to the UK in 1996 to complete a BA (Hons) in Fashion Design at Ravensbourne College. She worked for several of London’s top couture designers before eventually creating her own design label.

A spokesperson for Sladers Yard, said: “Lise works with many different techniques, from delicately thin thrown vessels to roughly textured slabs of coarse clay. Many of the pieces start off on the potter’s wheel, before being manipulated, altered and carved to soften their shape and appearance away from the perfect circular form.

Lise joins fellow Norwegian, Petter Southall, whose wooden creations help bring a Scandinavian design sense using trees from Northern European.

He trained as a traditional wooden boatbuilder in Norway before running his own boat yard before working on a famous wooden yacht in Maine, USA.

Setting up his workshop in 1991, he has recently moved to Denhay- north of Bridport with Sladers Yard his showroom.

A spokesperson for Sladers Yard said: “Petter is a master-craftsman in wood and an exceptional designer. The strong simple lines of his pieces look effortless, while being unique and never seen before.

"Recently he has been making sculpture and constructions for gardens and outdoor spaces as well as continuing his long and distinguished career designing and making beautiful useful pieces of furniture.”
