The countdown is on for a large walking and cycling event.

Ride and Stride for Churches returns on Saturday, September 14.

It is one of Dorset’s biggest mass-participation events and raises money to help historic church buildings to maintain roofs and walls.

Last year hundreds of participants from more than 140 parishes raised nearly £100,000, allowing the Dorset Historic Churches Trust make grants of more than £140,000.

A spokesperson for the event said: “At a time of rising building costs for listed buildings, this is a lifeline for hard-pressed parishes, both urban and rural.

“An important feature of the event is that half of the cash raised is returned to the parish that raised it, meaning that everybody wins. The event also makes a great social experience for participants who keep fit, see the beautiful Dorset countryside and are part of a county-wide charitable initiative.

“While the Ride and Stride is fun for families and groups to do on the day, some people also get a bit competitive about it. At the end of the process, the Morshead Trophy is awarded to the parish the Trustees feel has made to best contribution.”
