Travellers have been moved on after setting up camp in a West Bay.

The police were alerted to their presence at 12.45pm today, Thursday, July 25 at West Bay Road in West Bay.

Officers attended the site and liaised with those present and the local authority.

Three police cars were seen at the site.

It is understood that the same group first set up camp around the edges of Sandringham Field, close to St Mary's First School, off Armada Way in Dorchester.

It was reported that the camp was set up around 10.40pm on Tuesday, July 23 and the travellers were subsequently served with a Section 62 notice earlier today.

This stated they must leave the county or stay at Dorset Council’s transit site.

They appeared to move to West Bay where officers attended and liaised with those present as well as the local authority.

At around 3.20pm, it was confirmed the group had left the site.

A spokesperson said: "We received a report at around 12.45pm on Thursday July 25 of an unauthorised encampment in West Bay near Bridport.

"Officers have attended the location and are liaising with those present, as well as the local authority.

"We will continue to monitor the situation and work with our local partners and will take appropriate further action if required."

A spokesperson for Dorset Council said: “A group of travellers at Sandringham Field in Dorchester were served with a Section 62 notice earlier today, which states they must leave the county or stay at Dorset Council’s transit site.

"They appeared to move to West Bay, where the police attended and informed them they could not stay there either. We believe they intend to leave imminently (if they haven’t done so already), but will continue to monitor the situation."
