Come rain or shine visitors are guaranteed to find something to keep the kids busy in Lyme Regis this summer.

Alongside its popular walks programme, Lyme Regis Museum has announced a busy timetable of activities and events running throughout July and August - many of which are free with admission.

The museum has recently been awarded a Travellers Choice Award for 2024 which means that it is in the top 10 per cent of places to visit worldwide.

Museum director, Bridget Houseago, said: “Alongside our collections and new exhibitions we are delighted to be offering a truly varied timetable of activities and events to suit all ages for the holidays. Wonder, learn and be inspired at Lyme Regis Museum this summer.”

Back by popular demand, the museum will be running rock pooling walks, giving visitors the opportunity to explore the pools and crevices of Monmouth Beach with Chris Gasson, the West Dorset Forager. 

For the more intrepid explorers out there, the Jurassic Coast adventure walk will also be available.

Craft-lovers of all ages will be able to enjoy its drop-in, artist-led sessions of clay modelling, print making or 3D modelling – which includes the opportunity of taking home a unique memento from the day inspired by its collections and exhibitions.

For visitors that are interested in learning more about the town and its past, a ghost walk and history walk have also been announced.

And as always, the museum will be offering its popular fossil walks.

Visitors this summer will be amongst the first to see and find out about the famous book which once belonged to Mary Anning and was returned to the museum from Australia after being stolen 40 years ago.

The book is now on show in the museums Writers’ Gallery.

Fossil fanatics will also love the new ‘Plesiosaurus 200’ exhibition in the Geology Gallery which celebrates 200 years since Mary Anning’s discovery of the first complete plesiosaur.

It explores the history of this ground-breaking discovery and is brought right up-to-date with amazing local modern finds including the second ever specimen of a very rare new plesiosaur -  the ancestor of the  ‘Sea Rex’ discovered in Kimmeridge which featured in a BBC documentary with David Attenborough.
