Representatives for a west Dorset-based mental health charity were invited to attend a royal garden party at Buckingham Palace to receive a prestigious award.

Harmony, based in Bridport, provides support to hundreds of people from across west Dorset each year, offering friendly advice, help, free weekly activities, and crisis mental health support.

It recently celebrated its ten year anniversary and its community efforts have been honoured in being awarded  the King's Award for Voluntary Service - the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK, equivalent to an individual receiving an MBE.

The award was officially presented to co-founder Roz Copson and long-standing Harmony volunteer Rob Johnson at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

Prince William, Zara and Mike Tindall, Princess Beatrice and Theresa May were in attendance.

Despite wet weather on the day, that didn't dampen the spirits of Roz and Rob who were able to enjoy a "memorable" and "lovely" royal celebration.

Roz Copson said: "The day was certainly a memorable one. There were people of various nationalities in traditional costumes and ladies with lovely attire, fascinators and fashion hats.

"The gentlemen in fine suits and a lovely atmosphere. The staff at the garden party looked so smart and were very attentive.

"The afternoon tea was wonderful with a variety of things to eat. When however, we were all gathered in the garden (which are lovely) the heavens opened and we all got soaked, even with a sea of umbrellas popping up.

"Fortunately we were staying overnight at The Union Jack club in London as we are both ex services. It was a great place to stay and again, everyone was attentive and we were grateful to be able to change into dry clothes and travel back the next day.

"We were just so pleased to represent the Harmony charity which has now become an integral part of the Bridport Community."

Along with contributions from trusts and foundations, the charity also launched a fundraiser to support the initial stage of the move.

Last year Harmony also received a grant from the National Lottery Community Fund so it can continue to support the Bridport community over the next five years.

In addition to its daytime support, Harmony also runs The Community Front Room, a crisis mental health support service every Thursday to Sunday between 2.15pm to 9.45pm, for anyone needing immediate one to one support.
