A car was 'destroyed' in a blaze that blocked a major Dorset route  this morning.

The A35 was blocked due to a car fire between the A354 Weymouth Road (Football Ground Roundabout) and the A37 at Monkeys Jump Roundabout.

Delays were reported of up to 15 minutes.

The road was closed between 4.52am and 5.50am to allow emergency services to safely deal with the incident.

Police and firefighters attended the incident and no injuries were reported.

The fire crew used two hose reel jets to extinguish the blaze.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to the A35 between Monkey Jump roundabout and the football stadium roundabout in Dorchester at 4.50am this morning (June, 17) for a car well alight on the carriageway.

"One crew from Dorchester attended and two breathing apparatus wearers used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire, which destroyed the car. There were no injuries and the stop (meaning the incident had been dealt with and no further action was required) was at 5.23am."

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: "We received a report at 4.52am on Monday, June 17 of a car on fire on the A35 near to Monkeys Jump roundabout in Dorchester.

"The road was closed to allow emergency services to safely deal with the incident. It reopened at around 5.50am. Local authority made aware. No injures reported."
