A road closure is in place on a major road after a caravan caught fire.

Dorset Police received a report at 12.38pm today, Monday, June 3 that a towed caravan had caught fire on Bridport Road near Martinstown. 

Officers were present at the scene as well as the fire service.

There are no reports of any injuries.

A road closure was put in place on the A35 both ways from Monkeys Jump roundabout and Winterbourne Abbas.

Heavy traffic has been reported in the area. 

A driver in the area said: "There was lots of white smoke & burning metal smell when I passed, it seemed the front of the caravan was running down the hill."

The accident was cleared and the road was reopened at 2.54pm.

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: "At 12.28pm on Monday June 3, Dorset Police received a report that a towed caravan had caught fire on Bridport Road near Martinstown.

"Officers are currently attending with the fire service and a road closure has been put in place.

"No injuries have been reported."

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said: "We were called at 12.13pm for a caravan well alight, three crews attended (from Dorchester, Bridport and Weymouth) and two breathing apparatus wearers and two hose reel jets were used to extinguish the fire, which also affected the adjacent hedgerow.

"The car that had been towing the caravan had been unhitched before we arrived on scene. 

"No injuries are mentioned."
