Thunderstorms and ‘intense downpours’ could lead to disruption across the county, according to the Met Office.

A yellow weather warning for thunderstorms has been put in place for today (Saturday, May 18) by the Met Office.

The warning is in place across western parts of Dorset from 1pm to 8pm.

Spray and sudden flooding could lead to difficult driving conditions and some road closures, whilst there is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings possible from floodwater.

There is also a small chance that some communities will be temporarily cut off by flooded roads.

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: “Scattered slow-moving heavy showers and thunderstorms are likely to develop across parts of Wales and southwest England during Saturday afternoon.

“Some intense downpours are possible in a few places, giving up to 30 mm of rainfall in less than hour and perhaps 40-50 mm over two to three hours leading to surface water flooding.”

“If you find yourself outside and hear thunder, protect yourself by finding a safe enclosed shelter, such as a car. Do not shelter under or near trees, or other structures which may be struck by lightning. If you are on an elevated area move to lower ground.”
