More than £1,000 has been raised for a lifesaving charity during an ‘overwhelming’ fundraising event.

Neil Carter, who works as a security officer at Weymouth College, walked 33 miles of the Jurassic Coast in aid of the RNLI, starting at the Lyme Regis lifeboat station and finishing at Weymouth lifeboat station.

He completed the challenge just under his target time of 12 hours and was greeted with cheers from supporters and champagne on the finish line.

Neil, who lives in Bridport and has a family history of relatives working at sea, took on the challenge to honour the brave volunteers of the RNLI, who have been saving lives at sea for 200 years.

He said: “The walk began at precisely 6.30am outside Lyme Regis lifeboat station following the coastal path to West Bay which included a brutal climb of Golden Cap.

“I reached West Bay at 10.15am where I was met by my son Mark and my partner Annaliese brought me fluid supplies. Mark walked with me to Hive Beach where I then continued along the beach to Abbotsbury arriving at 1pm.

“This is where I met Dan and Lyndsey Eccleston, who walked the remaining 17 miles with me. We arrived at Weymouth RNLI shop at 6.28pm, where we were met by a small crowd and an applause – very overwhelming.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who have sponsored and supported me and, in my eyes, as they are the real heroes in this by raising £1167 to date, all I had to do is walk, so a massive thank you."
