RESIDENTS have been warned not to leave cooking unattended after firefighters were called out twice over the weekend.
In the first incident a meal that was left in an unattended oven caused a fire in a Bridport home.
Crews from Bridport Fire Station rushed to the property on the morning of Sunday, November 26 after reports that smoke alarms were sounding.
Upon arrival to the home, crews found that the homeowner's cooking had been left in the oven along with a serving tray.
Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire after removing and isolating the oven.
A spokesperson for Bridport Fire Station said: “We were mobilised to alarms actuating at a residential property in Bridport.
“On arrival crews found cooking that had been left in the oven along with a serving tray. Crews extinguished the fire by removal and isolation of the oven.
“Never leave cooking unattended, ensure you only put items that are oven safe into an oven and set timers to remind you when your cooking is finished.”
This followed a similar incident on Saturday, November 25, when a fire broke out at a block of flats in Bridport after a resident left their cooking on the hob.
Three fire crews from Bridport, Lyme Regis and Beaminster rushed to Hibernia Place shortly after 10am after receiving reports of a fire.
Smoke alarms rang out in many of the flats and one resident also reported that they could smell burning in their property.
Luckily, the fire was extinguished by the resident whose cooking it was before fire crews arrived and it was quickly removed from the property.
Firefighters helped to ventilate the flat, leaving it in a safe condition before their departure.
A spokesperson for Bridport Fire Station said: “We were mobilised to alarms actuating at multiple flats in Bridport.
“On route this was upgraded to fire residential after control received a call from a resident who could smell burning.
“Lyme Regis Fire Station were then also mobilised. The fire was extinguished by the resident before our arrival.”
The team have also issued safety advice to prevent incidents like this from occurring.
“Never leave cooking unattended, keep the cooking area clear of items that can catch alight, ensure cookers and hobs are off after use and remember that they will stay hot for some time after being switched off, make sure you have smoke alarms installed and check they work regularly.”
