A person had to be rescued and treated for smoke inhalation after a kitchen fire.

Two crews from Bridport Fire Station and one from Beaminster Fire Station attended a house fire in Orchard Crescent, Bridport yesterday at around 2.28pm.

The fire started when something was left on the hob in the kitchen on the ground floor.

The occupant was brought to safety from upstairs and needed to be treated for smoke inhalation before being handed over into the care of the ambulance service.

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue said: "We were called to a property in Orchard Crescent, Bridport at 2.28pm yesterday for a kitchen fire.

"Two crews from Bridport and one from Beaminster attended, and four breathing apparatus wearers used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire, which started after something was left on the hob.

"The occupant was brought to safety from an upstairs room by firefighters, who gave oxygen therapy before paramedics arrived to take over patient care."

The stop message - meaning the incident is under control and no further resources are required - came in at 3.10pm.

Bridport Fire Station has issued the following tips for cooking safely:

• Keep the oven, hob and grill clean as a build-up of fat or grease can catch fire when hot.

• Keep tea towels and cloths away from the cooker and hob, and take care if you’re wearing loose clothing.

• Make sure children are never left alone in the kitchen when you’re cooking.

• Saucepan handles left sticking out create a danger – there’s a risk they could be caught, leading to the pans being knocked off the hob.

• Use spark devices to light gas cookers as they are safer than matches and lighters.

• Never leave cooking unattended.

• Keep electrical leads and appliances away from water.

• Avoid cooking if you are tired, have been drinking alcohol or are taking medication that leaves you drowsy.
