A community is set to come together again to mark St Catherine’s Day, lighting up a local landmark.

The Candles on the Hill celebration will be held on St Catherine’s Hill, Abbotsbury, on Sunday, November 26 and commemorates St Catherine of Alexandria - an important early Catholic martyr - whose feast day is on November 25.

On the day, a service will be held in St Catherine's Chapel at Abbotsbury and will be proceeded by music from a singing group. The service will start at 3.45pm and is being run by Friends of St Nicholas.

A wheel made out of candles will be formed, representative of the Catherine wheel commemorating the saint’s wheel of martyrdom before the night fall.

Then, when dusk falls, the hill will be lit up towards the chapel by a path of LED candles.

Local schools in Abbotsbury have been given candle bags containing sand, a battery and tealight to decorate and commemorate the life of a loved one.

People last year remembered lost family members and pets through their decorated lantern bags.

Lantern bags will also be available in shops around the village for £2 from local shops or the Lantern Workshop at Strangeways Hall on the day from 12pm to 3pm.

There will also be a workshop for candle bags at the Abbey Tithe Barn Christmas Sale on Saturday, November 25.

Last year's event was expected to have raised more than £400 for the Friends of St Nicholas.

The village of Abbotsbury will be alight that weekend as the tropical gardens will be illuminated. The weekend will also see a Christmas fair held at Abbey Farm.
