Local author Sarah Scally has been celebrating the launch of her debut novel The Postcard in the Window.
Sarah was featured in an article in the News back in 2020 when her manuscript for The Postcard in the Window - originally called New Members Welcome - was longlisted for the Comedy Women in Print Prize 2020.
The characters started life in a radio play, written by Sarah, which was broadcast on Bridport Community Radio as part of a week of events run by the Bridport Arts Centre in 2014.
That play, The Happy Wanderers, formed the kernel of an idea that she has now developed into a full-length novel.
Sarah said: “It’s been exciting to bring the book to life, after working on it for so long. I hope readers will find the book to be uplifting and humorous; it also contains a romantic subplot. It is the first book in a series – the second coming soon - and, from initial reviews, is being well received.
"It was lovely to be able to hold the finished book after staring at it on a computer screen for so long. It is the first in the series and now my focus has changed to the second one."
Sarah works four days a week in an HR-type role for the NHS.
"I didn't picture myself as the author of a novel. I always wanted to write but always shorter stories, but I did the radio play and really enjoyed the script-making and dialogue and it sort of grew from there," added Sarah.
After writing a sequel to this novel, Sarah is planning to go darker and try her hand at thrillers.
She said: "I am very grateful to the Bridport Arts Centre for encouraging people at a community level and everyone who has supported me in this endeavour."
The Postcard in the Window is available to buy from Amazon, or directly from Sarah.
