Bridport Disabled Carers and Friends Club are desperately searching for a volunteer to take over the running of the group.
Husband and wife, Pete and Sue Bowditch have been running the club for 30 years but sadly, due to Pete’s diagnosis with stage four liver and bowel cancer they need to find someone to take over the running of the club.
In a desperate plea for volunteers, Pete said: “We can’t find anyone to take over, we just need someone to come along and make the tea and coffee and my wife is happy to continue running the financial side of things.”
Pete described the club as a place to ‘sit and have tea and coffee and put the world to rights.’
The club still has three of its original members that attend the weekly meetings which take place every Thursday from 9am-12pm at Vernons Court Community Room on South Street, Bridport.
There is wheelchair access available at the venue and it’s the opportunity to call in for a chat or seek advice in a friendly environment.
The original members used to attend a group in Weymouth but decided to create their own 30-years-ago in Bridport due to the bus service coming to a halt.
Pete added: “You don’t have to be disabled to come along, family and friends are welcome - only around seven of our members are disabled.
“It has been somewhere to go one morning a week to have a sensible chat with people with similar problems.
“There’s no commitment just something to get you out of the house, especially during the winter months.
“We just want someone to come in and take over – I don’t know how long I have got left now.”
The club always get together and have a Christmas lunch as well as a fish and chip lunch during the summer.
The couple are getting worried about keeping the club going and current members are unable to take on the role due to medical reasons.
If you would like to apply for the role or get involved with running the club, contact Pete and Sue Bowditch on: 01308 423620.
