One of Bridport’s biggest litter picks is set to take place.
From Street to Sea is Bridport's spring mass litter pick. It will take place from 10am on Monday, May 8.
The event is organised by Bridport Litter Free Street Champions and the West Bay Beach Clean Group. It sees the community come together to clean the town, with some getting competitive with fellow pickers over who could collect the most rubbish.
But organisers say it is the masses of small items such as crisp packets, snack wrappers, plastic bottles and cigarette butts that do the most damage, breaking down into microplastics which pollute our rivers and seas, damaging habitats, poisoning wildlife and ultimately entering the food chain.
Mayor Ian Bark said: “Sadly, Bridport still has its fair share of litter. Our streets, green spaces, rivers and beaches are all spoilt by those who choose to discard rather than dispose of their litter in a responsible, environmentally friendly way. In fact, there is not a street which is truly litter free.”
Following the success of previous events, an additional rendezvous point has been added at the Waitrose car park where pickers from that end of the town can gather at 10am.
This is in addition to the Co-op, Morrisons and the Black Hut on East Pier, West Bay sites used on previous occasions.
The aim of From Street to Sea is to have people who care about the town and the environment out on the streets, on the rivers and on the beaches, removing the rubbish that is not only ugly to look at but extremely toxic.
Cllr Ian Bark added: “My message to the people of Bridport is, instead of moaning about it, get out and do something about it.”
This time the litter pick is linked to 'The Big Help Out' which is part of the celebrations to mark the coronation of King Charles III.
To get involved simply arrive at one of the four rendezvous points and you will be provided with the equipment needed to get going.
