Arsonists are suspected of lighting a fire at a derelict building in Bridport.

Firefighters were alerted to the site, the former adult education centre, in Flood Lane, at just before 10.30pm last night.

Bridport Fire Station said: "Both fire engines mobilised to Flood Lane after smoke was seen issuing from the now derelict adult education centre.

"Crews gained entry and extinguished a fire which appeared to have been deliberately set."

Last July a fire was deliberately started at the same building.

The fire service said at the time it was obvious people had been entering the building unlawfully and concluded that the blaze at the property was deliberate after cushions and materials from a sofa bed were set alight inside.

The brigade said at the time: "What seems like harmless fun could have major implications. This fire also caused a strain on the emergency services due to the amount of appliances and officers in attendance plus all the standby moves instigated to cover stations in attendance. The local authority were requested to attend to secure the building."
