BRIDPORT secured their fifth victory in eight South West Peninsula League Premier East games with a 2-0 win over Holsworthy at St Mary’s Field.

Three points gave the Bees an instant response to the 2-1 blip against Elburton Villa last week, moving Chris Herbst’s men up one place to 13th in the process.

Bridport were dominant from the off, Tom Richardson and Riley Weedon firing over before Richardson was denied an opener by the offside flag.

However, Herbst’s men took the lead 31 minutes in when Fred Parsons headed Riley Weedon’s corner back across goal, Sol Ayunga applying the finishing touch.

Either side of the break, when Bridport led 1-0, chances came and went for Richardson, Parsons and Ayunga as the Bees showed their superiority.

Parsons saw an effort cleared off the line by Jack Walters and Tom Richardson saw a volley caught by Holsworthy keeper Ryan Chadwick as the Bees chased a second.

Their nerves began to jangle with a slender 1-0 lead and Bees’ keeper Jordon Scadding made a terrific late save from Gavin Carter to preserve his clean sheet.

Jon Elvins nodded over for Holsworthy and Bridport were relieved to secure the points, albeit in stoppage time, when sub Robin Jones converted Richardson’s cross.

Speaking post-match, Herbst said: “We’ve got good home form, we need to carry that on and we’ve delivered.

“First half we should’ve been three or four up. Going in at 1-0 it was a horrible thing but they delivered, 2-0 and a clean sheet I’m very happy.

“As soon as you get a clean sheet it brings confidence. We defended so well and when they were on top in the second half, everyone was fighting for the cause.”

Bridport now go into a Wednesday night clash at Cullompton Rangers (7.30pm).

Bees: Jo Scadding, Childs, Wright, King, Stanners (Handyside 47), Gape, Parsons (Jones 74), Daniels, Weedon (Baker 83), Richardson, Ayunga (Cox 71). Sub not used: Gall.
