A newly transformed £85,000 village green has been officially opened in Broadwindsor much to the delight of residents.
Children and families flocked to the new play equipment in Bernard’s Place, Broadwindsor on Saturday, November 12.
The village green got a thumbs up from villagers, who will also be able to enjoy newly created open space at the lower end of the green for outdoor exercise.
Andrew Hookings, interim chairman of the Comrades Hall Management Committee, said: “It was lovely seeing so many children enjoying themselves and having fun.
“It was a real celebration, with people of all ages involved in cutting the ribbon. The village green is a place for everyone, of all ages, to enjoy.”
The £85,000 project was funded by The National Lottery Community Fund, Dorset Council’s Capital Leverage Fund, Sport England’s Places and Spaces Fund, the FMR Trust, which is administered by Broadwindsor Group Parish Council, and a successful Crowdfunder appeal.
Bridport Round Table has also pledged support for the project and will be buying a piece of outdoor gym equipment for the green.
Mr Hookings said: “There has been so much support for this amazing project in such a short time, from children donating their pocket money to residents of sheltered housing giving some of their pension money to our Crowdfunder appeal.”
“We also have a fantastic, oak-framed shelter on the green, which was put together by a team of volunteers led by local resident Malcolm Heaver.”
The village green revamp was first mooted almost three years ago when the committee, under the chairmanship of the late David Leader, decided to open space for community events and, at the same time, improve the children’s play equipment.
Mr Hookings said: “The revamped village green is a fitting tribute to David’s memory. He was so involved in spearheading community projects, particularly those involving families and children, and the project at Bernards’ Place meant a great deal to him, and to all of us in the village.”
After the opening, guests went back for refreshments at The White Lion community pub and enjoyed a special cake made by manager Kate Staff which had been donated by a supporter of the Crowdfunder appeal.
